Thus saith the LORD: For three transgressions of Moab, Yea, for four, I will not reverse it: Because he burned the bones of the king of Edom into lime.
2 וְשִׁלַּחְתִּי־אֵ֣שׁ בְּמוֹאָ֔ב וְאָכְלָ֖ה אַרְמְנ֣וֹת הַקְּרִיּ֑וֹת וּמֵ֤ת בְּשָׁאוֹן֙ מוֹאָ֔ב בִּתְרוּעָ֖ה בְּק֥וֹל שׁוֹפָֽר׃ So will I send a fire upon Moab, And it shall devour the palaces of Kerioth; And Moab shall die with tumult, With shouting, and with the sound of the horn;
3 וְהִכְרַתִּ֥י שׁוֹפֵ֖ט מִקִּרְבָּ֑הּ וְכׇל־שָׂרֶ֛יהָ אֶהֱר֥וֹג עִמּ֖וֹ אָמַ֥ר יְהֹוָֽה׃ {פ}
And I will cut off the judge from the midst thereof, And will slay all the princes thereof with him, Saith the LORD.
Thus saith the LORD: For three transgressions of Judah, Yea, for four, I will not reverse it: Because they have rejected the law of the LORD, And have not kept His statutes, And their lies have caused them to err, After which their fathers did walk.
5 וְשִׁלַּ֥חְתִּי אֵ֖שׁ בִּֽיהוּדָ֑ה וְאָכְלָ֖ה אַרְמְנ֥וֹת יְרוּשָׁלָֽ͏ִם׃ {פ}
So will I send a fire upon Judah, And it shall devour the palaces of Jerusalem.
6 כֹּ֚ה אָמַ֣ר יְהֹוָ֔ה עַל־שְׁלֹשָׁה֙ פִּשְׁעֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל וְעַל־אַרְבָּעָ֖ה לֹ֣א אֲשִׁיבֶ֑נּוּ עַל־מִכְרָ֤ם בַּכֶּ֙סֶף֙ צַדִּ֔יק וְאֶבְי֖וֹן בַּעֲב֥וּר נַעֲלָֽיִם׃ Thus saith the LORD: For three transgressions of Israel, Yea, for four, I will not reverse it: Because they sell the righteous for silver, And the needy for a pair of shoes;
That pant after the dust of the earth on the head of the poor, And turn aside the way of the humble; And a man and his father go unto the same maid, To profane My holy name; .
And they lay themselves down beside every altar Upon clothes taken in pledge, And in the house of their God they drink The wine of them that have been fined.
Yet destroyed I the Amorite before them, Whose height was like the height of the cedars, And he was strong as the oaks; Yet I destroyed his fruit from above, And his roots from beneath.
Also I brought you up out of the land of Egypt, And led you forty years in the wilderness, To possess the land of the Amorites.
And I raised up of your sons for prophets, And of your young men for Nazirites. Is it not even thus, O ye children of Israel? Saith the LORD.
But ye gave the Nazirites wine to drink; And commanded the prophets, saying: ‘Prophesy not.’
Behold, I will make it creak under you, As a cart creaketh that is full of sheaves.
14 וְאָבַ֤ד מָנוֹס֙ מִקָּ֔ל וְחָזָ֖ק לֹא־יְאַמֵּ֣ץ כֹּח֑וֹ וְגִבּ֖וֹר לֹא־יְמַלֵּ֥ט נַפְשֽׁוֹ׃ And flight shall fail the swift, And the strong shall not exert his strength, Neither shall the mighty deliver himself;
15 וְתֹפֵ֤שׂ הַקֶּ֙שֶׁת֙ לֹ֣א יַעֲמֹ֔ד וְקַ֥ל בְּרַגְלָ֖יו לֹ֣א יְמַלֵּ֑ט וְרֹכֵ֣ב הַסּ֔וּס לֹ֥א יְמַלֵּ֖ט נַפְשֽׁוֹ׃ Neither shall he stand that handleth the bow; And he that is swift of foot shall not deliver himself; Neither shall he that rideth the horse deliver himself;
16 וְאַמִּ֥יץ לִבּ֖וֹ בַּגִּבּוֹרִ֑ים עָר֛וֹם יָנ֥וּס בַּיּוֹם־הַה֖וּא נְאֻם־יְהֹוָֽה׃ {פ}
And he that is courageous among the mighty Shall flee away naked in that day, Saith the LORD.

Commentary on Amos 2:6

Rashi

English

for selling an innocent man for money—The judges would sell the one who was innocent according to the law, with money; i.e, with the bribes they would receive from his opponent.

and a poor man in order to lock [the fields] Heb. Jonathan renders in two places [here and below 8:6]: in order to inherit. And I say that this is its explanation. They pervert the judgment of the poor man so that he will be compelled to sell his field that he had between the fields of the judges, and this one seeks an opportunity and takes it for a cheap price in order to fence in and lock all his fields together, and it should not intervene between them.

Radak (David Kimhi)

English

Thus said the LORD...Because they have sold for silver Those whose cause was just: Even though Israel had transgressed the three worse sins (those being idolatry, sexual immorality, and bloodshed)-- for those, they did not receive the decree of destruction and exile at the hands of the king of Assyria-- rather, because of the חמס/violence, which is the fourth sin (mentioned in Amos), and on the basis of that sin they were punished for all their sins that they did. And this is the same as the generation of the flood. Even though they were guilty of several sins, they were not punished until they were guilty of חמס, as it says "כִּֽי־מָלְאָ֥ה הָאָ֛רֶץ חָמָ֖ס מִפְּנֵיהֶ֑ם for the earth is filled with lawlessness because of them" (Gen 6:13). And even more so because the חמס came at the hands of the judges, who were responsible for upholding justice, but they decided their rulings based on taking bribes, which is what עַל־מִכְרָ֤ם" בַּכֶּ֙סֶף֙ צַדִּ֔יק/Because they have sold for silver

those whose cause was just" means, and the explanation of "צַדִּ֔יק" in that verse is "one whose cause was just."
